Anton Barbeau: Psychedelic Mynde of Moses

It’s been several pots of Darjeeling since my last encounter with this fine lad, so it has made my flippin’ day/week/month to be gifted with a new Anton to cup cochlea to. And to the screaming young hoards and throngs of ne’er-do-well’s, I attest – no – affirm, that this is THEE one y’all been waiting for. Read more »

Musical Chairs, December 2010

Jonathan Mendick went to band camp in high school. He played saxophone for seven years because he thought it fit his personality better than piano, which he also played for five years. In college he picked up guitar to, well, attract the ladies. He also picked up a degree in journalism Read more »

Musical Chairs

Davis singer/songwriter Garrett Pierce works in a traditional folk rock format (think cerebral sixties/seventies era folkies like Leonard Cohen and Joni Mitchell) with thoughtful lyrics and tasteful, largely acoustic accompaniment.  Both the SF Weekly and SN&R have raved about his stuff, and with good reason – he’s very good at what he does.  He’s just tidying up his latest record City of Sand, which is due out in a few months, but he took some time out to run though some of his musical faves for us. I spent several days and nights searching out the best of Sac’s patios. It was a tiresome task, but somehow I muddled through. May I present to you the more noteworthy of Sacramento’s outdoor eating and drinking locales. Read more »

North Sac Treats

It might not be apparent to the casual reader, but beneath the sunny surface of Sacramento’s free publications lurks an intense rivalry.  The competition between MidMo and SN&R is particularly intense.  It is rife with corporate espionage and backstabbing.  I’m pretty sure Nick Miller is tapping my phones.
