Musical Chairs, March 2011

As soon as we scheduled a Food Issue there was no question who was at the top of our list for the issue’s Musical Chair: Aaron Moreno. If Moreno doesn’t sound familiar, odds are you may know his alter ego: bluesman Aaron King. Read more »

Musical Chairs, December 2010

Jonathan Mendick went to band camp in high school. He played saxophone for seven years because he thought it fit his personality better than piano, which he also played for five years. In college he picked up guitar to, well, attract the ladies. He also picked up a degree in journalism Read more »

Davis singer/songwriter Garrett Pierce works in a traditional folk rock format (think cerebral sixties/seventies era folkies like Leonard Cohen and Joni Mitchell) with thoughtful lyrics and tasteful, largely acoustic accompaniment.  Both the SF Weekly and SN&R have raved about his stuff, and with good reason – he’s very good at what he does.  He’s just tidying up his latest record City of Sand, which is due out in a few months, but he took some time out to run though some of his musical faves for us. MidMo Art Director Judd Hertzler is a man for all seasons.  He stays plenty busy, with a family, an art/design career, skateboarding obsession, and, as some readers might remember, a recent book, A Moment to Reflect, which captures a good mix of his creative spirit.  When we asked Judd if he’d be interested in taking a spin in the Musical Chair he quickly obliged, revealing a side we’d never seen before: gun toting hip hop.  What? troy mightyBeginning this month, Troy Mighty will be taking over the Incoming! section from our much-beloved, but greatly-in-need-of-a-break Heather Klinger.  Mighty first came to our attention a decade ago with his fantastically drawn indie rock posters that seemed so cutting edge in SactoY2K.  It came as no surprise when he also turned out to be the driving force behind Dead Western, a music project that effortlessly keeps the ‘freak’ in freak folk.  Mighty just kept turning up, so it was probably inevitable that he’d end up in our pages at some point. Rick Ele, better known as DJ Rick, is a one-man tsunami of indie music enthusiasm.  By turns KDVS DJ, booker, tour driver, cheerleader, roadie, promoter, merch guy, reviewer and band-entertainment-specialist, Ele wears so many hats in the Sacto music scene that had he accepted the recently-offered gig to run a club in France it would have taken 6 people to even begin to replace him here.  The truth is, he’s irreplaceable.  Ele is the unstoppable force meeting the immovable object, over and over again and then getting up each morning to go to his day job.    Here’s his thoughts on music, 2009..
