Where the Tiger meets the Dragon

I am always surprised when people don’t know about the tile house in Curtis Park. It’s not like this house is a shirking violet, but it is a block or two off of the main thoroughfare. I could tell you exactly where it is, but what’s the fun in that?

In unrelated news, John Olmsted died earlier this month. Without him, Sacramento and the world would not have the American River Parkway. Rest in Peace, sir. Thanks for everything. His son made a movie about his life, “My Father who Art in Nature.”

My first encounter with this house was around 1994 or 1995. A group of friends driving around in the middle of the night, up to some dimly remembered no good, when the driver suddenly turned down an alley, stopped the car, and said “Get out of the car.” A bit taken aback, we stepped out, then noticed the house with its tiger and dragon, illuminated by a nearby lamppost. We were suitably amazed.

I always take my out-of-town friends by this place.

One of my favorite homes in Curtis Park! I’ve always loved this unique and creative home.
