Flatlanders III
Nelson Gallery
July 8 – August 15
Reception: July 8, 5:30-7:30PM

Nelson Gallery Director Renny Pritikin’s biennial Flatlanders show is always something to see, and this year’s edition features an intriguing mix of newer talent and artists with long history in the region. Among the newer artists are two local art teachers, Mitra Fabian and Ianna Frisby. Fabian’s installation work is reminiscent of Tara Donovan; Frisby is best known as the co-founder of Tangent Gallery and does a wide variety of generally sculptural work. On the other end of the scale are two former CSUS professors with  five decade art careers – Irving Marcus and Jack Ogden.  Marcus has been making art in Sacramento since the fifties, and was involved in Oak Park’s avant garde Belmonte Gallery; Jack Ogden is another regional heavyweight whose Phil Guston influenced renderings are instantly recognizable. Suzanne Adan and Michael Stevens, both active in the region since the seventies, will be familiar to anyone who has been following regional art for long.  Adan has most recently been working on a playful piece for the new airport expansion.  Stevens’ sculpture mixes whimsy into darker themes. Painters Patrick Marasso and Jim Albertson round out this roundup of regional talent. Marasso paints in a photorealist manner, often working from old photos.  Albertson has a lighter touch and has done illustration work for the Bee and other publications.  Quite a mix, and guaranteed to be an interesting look at some of the region’s most active artists.

A Changing Surface
Prints in the Age of Digital Media

Center for Contemporary Art Sacramento
July 9 – August 15
Preview Party: July 9, 5-8PM
Film Screening: All About Prints, July 10, 2PM
Reception: July 10, 6 – 9PM

Aside from photography, print is the art format that has seen the most change since the turn of the century.  The ubiquity of digital media has changed not only the manner in which artists make printed artwork, but the way in which viewers perceive and interact with the prints.  Here CCAS presents an exhibit exploring how a variety of artists approach print work in the 21st century.  Artists involved range from the local (John Driesbach of CSUS and Carlos Francisco Jackson of UCD) to the international (Indonesion art collective Tromaroma).   Don’t miss the July 10 screening of  All About Prints which includes an introduction and discussion with guest curator Tatiana Reinoza Perkins of the Universtiy of Texas, Austin.

Hang at the Crocker
Submit by July 20

Do you want your art to be in the Crocker’s permanent collection? Here’s your chance! New and current Crocker members are invited to submit a 4X6 inch image – a piece of art, a photo, a collage, anything as long as it’s 2D – which new media artist Rachel Clarke will use to create a piece that will debut at the Crocker’s Grand Opening in October. Envisioned as a community art project, the finished artwork will function as a snapshot of Sacramento 2010 and will become part of the Crocker collection. Deadline to submit is July 20, 2010.

Bending the Rules
Cherilyn Naughton
Axis Gallery
July 3 – August 1

OK- I’ll be honest.  I know next to nothing about this artist.  I saw the photo of Welcome on the show’s postcard, and if the rest of the show is half as good as that smart and elegant piece it will be well worth checking out.
