Incoming! Random Abiladeze w/ Bread Fam, DJ Professor K – Thurs, 10/6

I should be seeing a ton more hip-hop shows than I have, especially in this town where it’s so often thriving. I stumbled upon Random Abiladeze by accident a few years ago, and what a rewarding accident it’s been. This guy is a prophet – so down to earth, so articulate, so humble and cool and full of joy; an inspiration, to anyone smart enough to pay attention. He also SLAYS on the microphone! Come hear his hilariously scary “Walk Into My Office” and more, backed by a live band called Bread Fam, which he says “is a long inside joke from my alter ego, Mayne E. Savage…I’m ‘Raisin Bread’, Brian is ‘Wheat Bread’, Sam Phelps is ‘Rye Bread’, Matt Klee is ‘Sour Dough’, Cole Dutcher is ‘Wonder Bread’, and Tommy Garcia is ‘Pita Bread’.” Whatever the in-joke may be, this is the nutrition of a positive future – have yourself a slice.

Incoming! Alak, French Quarter, No Babies, Whitman, MOM – Weds. 10/5

A spattering of the most unique, charming, and challenging folk-ish music, plus the annoying, angular, shove-this-party-up-your-ass No Babies, plus the frightening and wonderful antics of MOM, equal a damn good Wednesday night in Davis. ‘Nuff said.

Incoming! Houses, Sweet Rom Dom Perignon 5/16

Everything is everything, now! Just when it seems like there might be no more possibilities, four more lines blur together to form a new and exciting musical path for the youth of tomorrow. Such is the era of today: mix up what already exists and use it, to the best of your fun and practical potential. This sort of energy, combined with the ease and quality of modern home recording, help make this gorgeous debut from Houses possible.  Released by Sacramento’s own Lefse Records, All Night is a rich and multi-layered mélange of texture, exploring what might all at once remind the listener of more captivating IDM jams, the blissed-out charm of Yacht Rock, or the repetitious, acid-soaked lyrical grooves of Animal Collective’s Panda Bear.  The story behind making All Night is almost more beautiful than the music within: a couple moves from Chicago to a remote village in Hawaii, where they drink, shower, and cook with rainwater, cultivating indigenous micro-organisms for work. Basking in the ease, simplicity, and loving nature of this new environment, he records, via solar-powered computer. She paints, and often lends her voice to his dreamy, spaced-out vocal tracks. “We inspired each other a lot out there, and I think it shows on the album…We just kind of melted into one person.” -TM

October is awesome. Make sure the moths haven’t eaten your sweaters because you will need them! I see the emergence of pumpkin patches, shorter days and ah yes, Buffalo Bill’s pumpkin ale. De-lish. Please go out and support not only the bands, but the venues who are opening their doors to live music. If at a coffee shop show- buy a cup of coffee or a tea, if at a pizza parlor- buy a slice and a drink. In these rough times every one needs a little help. And on to the article… Read more »

Incoming!

As I’m writing this, it’s only the middle of May and it’s nearing 100 degrees. By the time you pick up this issue, you will probably gaff at that while you stand near a magazine rack as the temperature creeps past 108. That said, we are in for a doozy of a summer. That shouldn’t stop you though from attending all the awesome shows heading our way. Load up on the sunscreen, bring lots of water and stay in the shade! This should be another summer to remember. With the dollar so weak, many bands from overseas are finally jumping on planes and heading our way. We’ve already been visited by bands from the UK and Canada, and we’ve also got Australians and New Zealanders heading our way!
